Ceretto Wines of Piedmont, Italy has partnered with AspriSpirits of India to focus on the untapped wine market in India. It will be launching its seven wine brands in 10 cities in India soon. The company is hoping for steady growth of the premium and quality wines in the Indian market.

Anheuser-Busch InBev close to brew deal with Wadwan (which is setting up a new brewery called Privilege Breweries near Pune)

Anheuser Busch InBev (AB InBev) is close to stitching a manufacturing alliance with the Wadhawan Group of Mumbai, which is setting up a new brewery called Privilege Breweries near Pune in Maharashtra. The new brewery, being set up by HDIL, a real estate firm promoted by the Wadhwan Group, is likely to have a capacity of 2.5 lakh cases of 7.8 litres each per month. AB InBev is the largest brewer in the world and the manufacturer of global brand, Budweiser. It also manufactures other brands such as Armstrong and Tennents. AB InBev already has a brewery in Hyderabad, which was established in 2007.

Budweiser enters North Indian market (Anheuser-Busch InBev expects to sell 2.5 million cases by Dec 2009)

Anheuser-Busch InBev of Belgium has launched its Budweiser beer in North Indian market. The company expects to sell 2.5 million cases of Budweiser by Dec 2009. Anheuser-Busch InBev has priced the beer at Rs. 30 a pint. The company is planning to retail brands like Stella, Artois, Beck's, Leffe and Hoegaarden.

Officer’s choice crosses 10 million mark (has registered a CAGR of 31 %)

Officer's Choice, the heritage whisky brand from Allied Blenders and Distillers, has exceeded sales of 10 million cases to emerge as the fastest growing whisky brand in India. The brand has registered a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 31 percent over the last three years.

Kishore Chhabria to unveil premium rum (to be launched in the traditional rum markets of Assam and West Bengal in the first phase)

Allied Blenders and Distillers (ABD), promoted by Mr. Kishore Chhabria, is planning to launch a premium rum brand initially in eastern India during Oct-Dec 2009. The rum would mainly be launched in the traditional rum markets of Assam and West Bengal in the first phase. ABD is the manufacturer of the whisky brand, Officer's Choice, and is targeting a turnover of Rs. 9.5 million in 2009-2010 from Rs.7 million in 2008-2009.

Italian brandy Stock 84 reaches Indian shores (and likely to be launched in Kerala during the Onam season)

Stock 84, the largest selling Italian brandy brand and owned by Stock Spirits International (SSI), is expected to be launched in India shortly. Stock 84, a 125-year-old brand, is to be initially launched in Kerala during the Onam season as the State is a predominantly rum and brandy market. Devicolam Distilleries, a subsidiary of Cee Cee Holding group of UAE, a global liquor distributor, has tied up with SSI to manufacture and market Stock 84 in India. Stock 84 will be sold at Rs. 900-1,000 per bottle in the country.

Vinbros eyes North American Markets (and is currently in the process of obtaining approvals to market liquor brands in the US)

Liquor manufacturer Vinbros of Puducherry (Pondicherry) has decided to launch its products one by one in North America and is currently in the process of obtaining approvals to market liquor brands in the US. The company bottles the Chateau Bouscailous red and white wines in association with P&P Import Export of France and also produces its Royal brand of whiskey in-house. Vinbros has already received permission from the Government of Canada to supply its premium whiskey brand, Royal Chieftain, to the Liquor Control Board of Ontario, a Government-owned liquor marketing agency.

USL Scotch in new pack sizes (the company expects to expand its market and brand share)

United Spirits Ltd (USL) has launched its premium scotch brand, Black Dog, in 370 ml and 180 ml packs in Tamil Nadu. The company is presently selling the brand in 750 ml and 60 ml packs. USL has a market share of 40 percent in the scotch market in India. The company expects to expand its market and brand share with the launch of the new pack sizes.

Bagpiper, McD continue boycott in Maharasthra (the two brands have reported an over 60% decline in sales)

The sales of United Spirits Ltd's (USL) two flagship brands, Bagpiper and McDowell, have been affected following a dispute between USL and the Indian Hotel and Restaurants Association (Ahar) and Maharashtra Wine Merchants Association (MWMA). The two brands have reported an over 60 percent decline in sales since 1 August 2009. The two brands have been boycotted throughout Maharashtra from 17 Aug 2009. The associations, among other things, are demanding waiver of delivery charges and also not being accountable for breakages of bottles during transit. They are also demanding uniformity in promotional schemes to all wine shops and hotels across the State.

Foreign liquor on a low in Delhi (owing to an increase in local levies by the Government of Delhi)
August 16
Sale of imported liquor such as wine, champagne and whisky has declined by 70 percent in Delhi following a sharp increase in prices owing to an increase in local levies by the Government of Delhi. The sales tax on imported liquor priced above Rs. 2,000 a bottle has been fixed at 30 percent, while those priced below Rs. 2,000 would attract a sales tax of 20 percent. The State Government earns Rs.11 billion in excise revenue from liquor sales every year. The higher tax has also increased the difference between prices at licensed outlets and the grey market.

United Spirits Ltd has launched Whyte & Mackay Special Scotch whisky in the Andhra Pradesh market. The brand is bottled in India. This launch boosts the company's presence in the bottled- in-India Scotch segment. The overall market in India for blended scotch whisky is 7,00,000 cases per annum, of which 6,00,000 cases are bottled locally.
