Philips embarks on two-toned mkt strategy to up sales

Philips India has embarked on a two pronged strategy of sense and simplicity for growth Philips would target the high end and the low end consumer at the same time. In cities, it is likely to market high end liquid crystal display television (LCDs), home theatre systems, high end lighting solutions and it plans to sell compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), wood stoves and lower priced electronic appliances for rural markets. Electronics & Appliances Mkt to reach US$40bn by 2012: ASSOCHAM-E&Y

ASSOCHAM and Ernst & Young have jointly projected size of electronics and appliances industry reaching at US$ 40 billion by 2012 with a CAGR of 11% provided a dedicated department for electronics and appliances is created by the government to promote domestic market and attracting investments from global players. In a Paper and Appliances Manufacturing – the
India opportunity jointly brought out by ASSOCHAM and E&Y points out the
market size of and appliances in as estimated to be US$ 27.38 bln for 2008-09. According to findings of ASSOCHAM-E&Y paper, key factors that are likely to drive domestic and appliances include growth in per capita income, shift in cultural patterns and life-styles and access to credit. Nearly 10 million households are estimated to have income levels above US$ 10,000 per annum. With a growth of 20% in per capita income, this segment’s opportunities are likely to be in luxury products. More than 95% of households are estimated to be below the income level of US$ 10,000 in 2009-10.

LG plans Rs 5 billion facility in South (for manufacturing home appliances, preferably in Chennai or Hyderabad)

LG Electronics India Ltd (LGEIL) is planning to set up a new facility for manufacturing home appliances in South India, preferably in Chennai or Hyderabad, at a cost of Rs. 5 sbillion. According to the company, transportation is the key factor in the home appliances segment and the new facility may be set up by mid- 2010. LGEIL presently has two production facilities at Ranjangaon near Pune in Maharashtra and Noida in Uttar Pradesh. LGEIL is planning to launch designer ACs in 2010 at prices five-seven percent higher than conventional ACs. The company expects its turnover to grow to Rs.130 billion during Jan-Dec 2009 from Rs. 107 billion in Jan-Dec 2008.

Govt scouting for e-passport componet suppliers (India to extend e-passport programme to common man)

The Government of India is on the lookout for suppliers of electronic components for an additional 20 e-passports. The government is looking to extend the e-passport programme beyond diplomats and government officials to the common masses. The Security Printing & Minting Corporation of India is expected to procure 20 million electronic contactless relays along with operating software for the production of e-passports over the next 24 months. The government launched a pilot e-passport programme on 25 Jun 2008 and the first 10,000 e-passports were issued to diplomats and senior government officials.

Samsung widens Led TV’s range (the company has launched a 32-inch LED TV at less than Rs70,000)

Samsung has expanded the range of light emitting diode (LED) televisions (TVs) in India. The company has launched a 32-inch LED TV at less than Rs. 70,000. Samsung has also launched a 55-inch LED TV at a price of Rs. 3 lakh.

Intel betting high on consumers, Smes to drive PC sales (personal computer sales is expected to grow by 7 percent in 2009-2010 to 7.3 million units)

Chip manufacturer Intel is hoping the personal computer (PC) sales to improve during Jul-Dec 2009 following a slow increase in demand for PCs from the small and medium enterprises (SME) as well as retail consumers. As per a study by Manufacturers' Association for Information Technology (MAIT), total PC sales declined by 7 percent in 2008-2009. However, MAIT is hopeful of PC sales growing by 7 percent in 2009-2010 to 7.3 million units.
