Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation is looking to establish 50 retail fish outlets across the state in the next three years. Such outlets are currently open in Bangalore and Madikeri and another outlet will be inaugurated at Mangalore on 9 Aug 2009. The retail outlets will provide dressed and condiments- incorporated fishes along with aquarium fish, fish feed and accessories.

Coke buys Kinley rights to end row with franchisees (in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra)

Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages (HCCB) has acquired the bottling and distribution rights for its Kinley packaged water brand from its franchisee bottlers in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. According to research firm AC Nielsen, Kinley accounts for 10.3 percent market share of the Rs. 22 billion retail packaged water market, which is growing at 17 percent per annum. HCCB is the bottling subsidiary of Coca-Cola India.

Storage of sugar and pulses barred in ports beyond 30 days (by the Government of India)
August 26

The Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, has prohibited importers from storing sugar and pulses in ports for more than 30 day for preventing hoarding. The ministry has also lowered free period for lifting stocks to three days from 15 days and also raised storage rates to prevent hoarding. The government's move will stop importers from taking advantage of high retail prices.

India keen to join Asean sea-food exporters group (India's entry likely to bring in quality standardisation)
August 31

The ASEAN Seafood Federation, a regional grouping of seafood processors and exporters from South East Asian Nations, has invited the Seafood Exporters Association of India (SEAI) to join the newly-formed group. SEAI is keen to join the group since it would get access to better technology, food safety assurance, logistics and marketing. The group claims to account for nearly 50 percent of global seafood production. India's entry into the group of ASEAN nations would result in better cooperation in areas such as quality standardisation, inspection and certification, labelling and packaging.

Wagh Bakri tea group has decided to commence its operations in North India with Delhi as a base. The group also plans to open a tea lounge in New Delhi. The group is targeting a five percent market share in North India by 2010. The group has a 50 percent market share in Gujarat.

The $43 billion beverages and snacks manufacturer, PepsiCo, is holding its annual three-day global meeting of its board of directors in India in mid-Nov 2009. The meeting is being held for the second time outside of USA and for the first time in India, demonstrating the country's importance in the company's future plans. The company had previously held a global board of directors meet outside USA for the first time in Mexico in 2004. PepsiCo held its 26-member executive committee meeting in India in Sep 2008.

Olive oil makes inroads into Indian kitchens (with consumption expected to jump to 25,000 tonnes by 2010)

The International Olive Council (IOC), which has been promoting olive oil in India since 2007, is on a promotional drive in 2009 and holding road shows, workshops and participating in food fairs to increase the popularity and usage of olive oil. Olive oil is slowly gaining in popularity following increasing awareness of its nutritional values and abilities to reduce risks of various diseases and is considered the healthiest cooking medium across the world. Olive oil consumption in India is expected to jump to 25,000 tonnes by 2010 from 2,300 tonnes in 2007 and 1,500 tonnes in 2006.

Man U restaurant in Delhi by year end (GMH to open cafes and all-day dining outlets in Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh)

Great Moments Hospitality (GMH) has signed a franchisee agreement with Manchester United Food & Beverage (MUFB) to open Manchester United Restaurant and Bar in Delhi by end-2009. Under the partnership, GMH has the rights to open cafes and all-day dining outlets for the brand in north India. It plans to open outlets in Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh by end-2010. MUFB, which has presence in Singapore, Japan, Indonesia and Malaysia has signed a franchisee agreement in Maharashtra and likes to have three or four franchisee agreements in India that are valid up to 2012.

August 28
MDH of Delhi is planning to foray into the ready-to-eat food segment by launching continental foods such as vermicelli, pasta and noodles with an investment of Rs. 500 million. The Rs. 3 billion MDH is a manufacturer and supplier of blended spices and other masalas. The company is expecting to launch the new foods by 2010- 2011, initially in north India.

Leading food and restaurant brands in the US are interested in entering the Indian market through the franchisee route. US brands such as Church's Chicken, CKE Restaurants, Tropical Sno, The Melting Pot and Papa Johns are keen on starting operations in India. The US Commercial Services' Franchise team in India has designed a unique programme called Focus Franchising to help Indian franchisees establish new and profitable commercial relations with US companies. The Indian franchise industry has an annual turnover of $3.3 billion with annual growth of 30-35 percent in the last five years.

Campco to raise éclair production capacity (expansion at Puttur unit at a cost of Rs3.80 crore)

The Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative (Campco) is planning to increase eclair production capacity at its chocolate factory in Puttur. Capacity at the eclair production unit is to be expanded at a cost of Rs3.80 crore. The unit presently has a capacity of producing around 300 tonnes a month and additional capacity of 500 tonnes a month would be installed.

Demand for cheese is picking up across smaller cities and towns apart from metros and is slowly taking a slice of the paneer market in the country. Parag Milk Foods has capitalised on the increasing demand for cheese by setting up India's biggest cheese plant at Manchar near Pune in Maharashtra with a 1,200 tonnes per day (tpd) capacity unit. The company has invested Rs70 crore for setting up the plant to process different kinds of cheese. The market for cheese in India is expected to grow by 30 percent in 2009 to 1,500 tpd from 1,200 tpd in 2008.

Domino's intends to set up express counters and provide online ordering services in India. The company intends to increase the number of outlets from 270 to 310 by Mar 2010. Domino's has launched a range of pastas in India. The company serves nearly one lakh customers a day.

EIH Ltd has signed an agreement with Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) to set up an in-flight catering facility. The facility will have an initial capacity of 30,000 meals a day. EIH intends to expand the capacity to 40,000 meals a day by 2015. DIAL has also signed a 25-years agreement with Celebi Hava Servisi As of Turkey to upgrade, maintain and manage the existing cargo terminal.

Private labels dent established brand shares (private labels are recording double-digit growth annually)
August 26
Private labels account for 10-12 percent of the overall fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) volumes, but are recording double- digit growth annually. This is likely to pose problems for the big FMCG brands in the near future. In the food and beverages category, Aditya Birla Retail's Feasters Noodles Family pack accounts for 40 percent of the category revenues. Kitchen's Promise pickles is recording more sales than Mother's Recipe, and sales of Feaster's Instant Drink Powders are more than double those of Tang.

Biscuit prices set to rise 10% (on account of soaring prices of raw materials such as wheat, milk powder, milk and sugar)
August 25
The Indian Biscuit Manufacturers Association (IBMA) has stated that organised biscuit manufacturers are planning to increase prices of biscuits by 10 percent from 1 Sep 2009. The price hike is attributed to soaring prices of raw materials such as wheat, milk powder, milk and sugar. IBMA comprises around 40 companies, primarily second- string manufacturers, which account for one-third of the country's organised biscuit trade estimated at Rs6,500 crore. The companies include regional biscuit manufacturers such as Priyagold, Crown, Anmol, Bonn and Cremica. However, top companies such as Britannia, Parle and ITC are yet to decide on increasing the prices of their biscuit products. The biscuit industry is highly price sensitive and a small price hike could lead to consumers changing brands.

The Godrej Group plans to exit from its edible oil and tea business as part of a strategy to focus on the core business of beverages and confectioneries under its Godrej Hersheys joint venture. The Godrej Tea business includes brands such as Godrej Noble House and Godrej Chai House, whereas the edible oils business has Godrej Cooklite, Godrej Oil and Godrej Vanaspati brands. The core business of Godrej Beverages and Foods Ltd (GBFL) is confectionery and beverages.

Snowman Frozen Foods Ltd, the cold chain logistics service subsidiary of Gateway Distriparks Ltd of Singapore, is looking to triple capacity with investments of Rs100 crore. The company presently has a fleet of 77 reefer vehicles and a capacity of about 10,000 pallets across 18 locations. It plans to expand to about 30,000 pallets over the next one-and-a-half years. This expansion will strengthen its cold chain storage and logistics infrastructure in India.

PepsiCo India has decided to launch its soft drink brand, Nimbooz, in southern and eastern India following success with the product in north India. PepsiCo has already launched Nimbooz in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and intends to launch the product in Kerala and West Bengal by end of Aug 2009. The company is focusing on enhancing distribution of Nimbooz across various parts of the country and expects the product to be available across India by Sep 2009.

Cavinkare readies for fast food segment (to start multi-cuisine fast food restaurants under the brand name of CK's Foodstaurant)
August 17
CavinKare Private Ltd of Chennai is planning to start multi- cuisine fast food restaurants and take on fast food multinational companies (MNCs) in India and the foreign countries. The company is currently testing the fast food business and has invested Rs. 7.5 million to set up its first restaurant in Puducherry. The investment for each additional restaurant is expected to decrease to Rs. 6 million. CavinKare Private Ltd intends to keep the menu for the chain in India as a combination of Indian cuisine including idlis, dosas, sandwiches and American favourites including burgers and fries. In Italy, the company intends to sell mix of pasta and burgers while in Taiwan it plans to sell noodles, dumplings, fries and burgers.

Heinz launches ready to eat meals (is available in four Indian recipes)

Heinz India has launched a new range of ready-to-eat meals, Heinz Kitchen Klassics. The range is available in four Indian recipes, including Amritsari Chole, Awadhi Dal Fry, Jammu Wale Rajma and Peshawari Dal Makhani. The products are priced at Rs. 45 and Rs. 50 for a 300 gm pack.

Tata Tea Ltd (TTL), which acquired the mineral water brand Himalayan in 2007, has decided to develop fortified water brands to expand its presence in the enhanced water (EW) segment, which is still at a nascent stage in India. TTL is also increasing its investments in research and development projects and for new launches in the EW segment. Fast moving consumer goods company, Bisleri International, has started testing processes for launching new products in the EW segment. It is planning to launch six flavoured water products.

Mcleod Russel gets into Africa (acquires a 75 % stake in Olyana Holdings LLC through Borelli Tea Holdings)
August 26
Borelli Tea Holdings Ltd would acquire a 75 percent stake in Olyana Holdings LLC, a limited liability company in the US, under a shareholders' agreement that it has signed with Olyana Holdings. Borelli Tea Holdings is a wholly owned subsidiary of McLeod Russel India Ltd. Mcleod has bought the stake in Olyana for $2.75 million. The acquisition of stake gives Mcleod access to Gisovu Tea Company in central Africa's Rwanda - Olyana had earlier signed a share sale agreement with the Government of Rwanda for the acquisition of 60 percent stake in Gisovu Tea. Gisovu has a tea processing factory that produces 1.7 million kilograms of tea. Mcleod is the world's largest bulk tea company with a production of 80 million kilograms.

Mars India hopes to get into pet food segment (targets sales of Rs. 1 billion in 2009)
August 4
Mars International India (MII) is planning to expand its production of Pedigree range of food for dogs to 22,000 tonnes per annum by 2012 at its plant in Hyderabad. MII sold 7,000 tonnes of Pedigree in 2008. MII is a 100 percent subsidiary of American Mars, the leading manufacturer of pet foods. The Indian unit contributed Rs80 crore to the $30 billion turnover of the company in 2008. MII is targeting sales of Rs100 crore in 2009.
